TWELFTH NIGHT and RICHARD III in Rep
October 20 @ 3:00 pm - November 13 @ 9:00 pm
SoHo Shakespeare Company and The Mechanicals Theater Company’s productions of Richard III and Twelfth Night mark an uncommon collaboration between two artistic collectives that refused to fold during the pandemic — and have emerged more vibrant than ever. Set in the decadent 1920s, The Mechanicals’ vision of Twelfth Night combines the grace and style of The Great Gatsby with the verve and spontaneity of speakeasy jazz halls, featuring original music and choreography. Twelfth Night tells a tale of class struggle, conflicted identity, and the limits of love. A century later, in SoHo Shakespeare Company’s Richard III, the House of York quarrels and carouses in its Hamptons mansion. But these old-money elites face a threat to their empire from within their own gilded halls. When we feel unloved, disposed, and disrespected…we might just kill for recognition. Both companies served as a home for hundreds of artists during the pandemic. Starting in 2020, SoHo Shakespeare Company supported over 100 artists with employment and reached a global online audience of almost 17,000. SoHo Shakes has also hosted over 250 hours of free public theatre classes, reaching over 200 individual students from 6 continents
