A site-specific performance featuring 7 dancers, a herd of horses and Skippy, a miniature donkey. The Fable is being created for the pasture, round pen and horses at Majoda Stables in Moorestown, NJ.
The Equus Projects tours throughout the Unites States and Europe creating interspecies site-specific works with dancers and horses. The company has created commissioned works for the Bates Dance Festival, NYC River to River Festival, the Myrna Loy in Helena MT, the Flynn in Burlington VT and Equine Affaire among others. This unique company of professional dancers conducts their natural horsemanship ground skills training at Majoda Stables. Since 2018 the company has performed at Majoda’s Open House and Horse Show events. On November 24 th , for the first time, the Equus Projects is presenting a stand-alone production. The Fable is being created for the pasture and round pen at Majoda Stables and will feature some of Majoda’s longtime equines.
The opening scene of The Fable features seven dancers performing in a pasture with ambient horses. The choreography gently serpentines among the ambient grazing horses and human-equine interactions punctuate the fluid human movement landscape. The dancers re-assemble into a human herd that gradually exits the field and draws the audience into a covered round pen. A narrator and Skippy, a miniature donkey, share a fable: Despite their reputation for stubbornness, Donkeys are just taking their time making decisions. Humans might learn something valuable about patience and listening from these animals.
The round pen choreography shifts into intimate encounters between a dancer and a horse at liberty, human duets, and visceral full cast choreography. The dancers often are functioning like jazz musicians, improvising based on thematic material. They are using the behavior of the animals to shape their choreographic decisions in a fluid merging of choreographic invention and equine-savvy decision-making. The Fable exemplifies the Equus Projects’ commitment to creating performances that move
beyond horses performing rehearsed tricks.
